Collage Projects
An elective course for advanced students to work in traditional or digital collage.
Course description:
The focus of this course is to explore the many possibilities of collage. We will investigate the technical and aesthetic aspects of making as well as the theoretical and postmodern implications of juxtaposing disparate images and ideas together. Our definition of collage will be broad and resulting artworks may include paper, pixels and other materials.
Informal lectures will uncover the broad historical scope of collage including Victorian scrapbooks, Dada experiments as well as explore the extended interpretation of collage via contemporary art, photography, pop culture, advertising and new media art. Demonstrations will cover a variety of techniques.
For the majority of the semester, students will work on a self-directed project related to their own interests and concerns. Independent thinking, a commitment to work and to thoughtful critiques is expected.
